We are entering the month of November and from now on the bombardment of offers and special shopping days will increase. While there are promotions that do mean a benefit to the household economy, others may only attract our attention and turn out to be a compulsive and unnecessary expense.

As a tradition in the United States, Black Friday is a day awaited by many, because of the price reductions that can reach up to 90% of the same. This commercial tradition has been adapted to other countries, becoming an event of commercial interest for companies.

Well, we are not here to discuss whether it is right or wrong to take advantage of these days of promotions, but to discuss how much is necessary to spend part of the family wealth or if it is better to wait for a better occasion.

Expenses for no reason

It is undeniable that in our Latin American countries there is a strong love for sports, especially soccer, and with the celebration of a new World Cup, it would be expected that there will be offers on televisions, screens and all kinds of devices. But how necessary is a new TV in the house? Perhaps the investment could be used to upgrade computer equipment or make home improvements.

Yes, it is a time of spending, but one should not get carried away by what others are doing. This is where reality must dominate the impulse to buy, because in addition to asking ourselves if we want to buy it is necessary, we must also see if we have the economic capacity to support this expense and if in the end it will not result in an unnecessary debt for the family.

It is true that normality is returning in many aspects of daily life, but we must be aware that we are slowly emerging from a health crisis and working conditions can change from one moment to the next. Also, there is an armed conflict that affects the prices of many products, especially fuels, so any savings should be a priority.

Remember, you don’t need to spend just because others do, it’s true that the deals may seem great, but the reality is that the day after the crazy shopping the stores will be there and possibly with the same or new deals.

Evaluate your investments and be realistic. A compulsive purchase today may be a cause for concern tomorrow.

Let’s make these tips practical but “juicy” enough so that when you decide to get started you already have a sense of what kind of entrepreneur you want to be.

If you are an entrepreneur who makes bets or deals with luck, this will be a waste of your time. What we want with these columns is for you to have the aspiration to be the owner of your business and not someone who puts on his CV that he made a business but… life, the pandemic, the bank, my health, took it away from me. You can have a great idea and not have appropriate funding. Every day we hear from people who want to start a business but don’t have the capital. Many entrepreneurship speakers or coaches always say: “If you want to be an entrepreneur, marry someone who has money to give it to you”. It is foolish to think that only those who have money can invest. This belief is useless. Discouraging people is not the best way to inspire. Uncertainty certainly won’t ask you how you feel to throw bad times at you but that’s not the way.

However, marrying someone for money is another way of saying that one person may have the vision for the business and another may finance it. These are distinct functions within the business. You will see it in the next columns.

In order to address the question, it is proposed to explore the definition of currency, and thus address its technological, economic and social dimensions, in order to conclude whether it can have a completely digital nature; it is concluded that universal access to the digital environment is still lacking for the whole society to recognize it as a means of exchange -also universal-, or at least, a representative part of humanity still needs to have access so that there is general consensus for the use and recognition of a completely digital currency.

What is digital currency?

The definition of currency according to the legal dictionary (Cabanellas), is “in a broad sense, any sign representative of the value of things, which allows to fulfill obligations, make exchanges or compensate damages. Strictly, the piece of metal (whether gold, silver, copper, aluminum or some alloy), usually in the form of a disk, which usually has on the obverse side the effigy of the sovereign, the national coat of arms or some other allegory; and on the reverse side the value it represents and the country in which it is legal tender. Money. Cash.”

Implicit in the definition is its purpose – economic representation for the fulfillment of obligations-, its form -metal, disk, shield-, categorized for the validation of the value -legal acceptance, legal tender in a territory-.

There is empirical evidence that in the functioning of the economy digital instruments are recognized as a means of representation and to fulfill obligations; on the other hand, their form represented by digital means has been accepted, i.e. on a technological and economic level their functioning has already been proven.

However, from a social point of view, if we accept that currency is a mechanism of exchange and assignment of value accepted by the whole society without exclusion -without prejudice to the existence of more precise economic and legal definitions-, it means that the whole society as a whole and universally should have access to use it as a medium, however, since its digital characteristic presupposes that the whole modern society has access to the digital environment to be able to interact with the rest of the community and enjoy the benefits of the use of digital currency as an exchange mechanism.

In this order of ideas, the question arises:

Does all humanity have access to the economy via digital channels?

Without fear of being wrong, I will say that I still do not.

There is still an access gap to the digital world in many countries -the northern area of Central America is an example-; therefore, we can hardly say that we are ready for a new type of fully digital currency if there is no universal access.

Of course, being a conclusion based on the assumption of universality, this statement carries with it relativity – to what level of access is something universal, so preparing a sufficient and peaceful consensus of humanity is the minimum level of readiness for the use of a fully digital currency; which carries with it the implicit political dimension of the search for the common good.
